Internal Wood Wall Panelling has been an integral part of the English family home for over four centuries.

Wood wall panelling, or Wainscoting, derived from the Dutch word Wagenschot, evolved from a simple room divider fashioned from solid tree wide planks. In the 16th Century we see the more traditional form of Oak panelling emerge with styles and rails framing small, usually quarter sawn, panels. The Georgian era heralded the introduction of Pine panelling with its lighter hue and versatility, especially for carving.

Architectural Heritage has been buying and selling Antique Panelled Rooms for the past 25 years and has in its inventory some of the most desirable rooms available on the market. Working with these increasingly rare Antique Panelled Rooms has been the inspiration to faithfully recreate the Georgian Pine Room and Tudor Oak Panelling in all their glory. To this end, Architectural Heritage is using its expertise, traditional techniques and experienced craftsmen to turn this inspiration into reality.

The Georgian Pine Room
The Pine is reclaimed from antique joists this adds a great depth of colour and an authentic feel. The creation of a panelled rooms starts with the Pine being planed down to the required size and thickness. The sections are then joined using the traditional technique of tongue and groove with Hessian backing, as was done in the 18th Century, using glue from an original formula.

Once the basic structure is formed, the craftsmen begin the lengthy process of carving all the various decorative elements. Doorways, architraves, cornicing and book casing etc, are all individually formed using mouldings based on designs from the 18th Century.

The completed room is then taken through the final process of hand finishing and waxing, bringing out the full colour and depth of the wood.

The Tudor Oak Panelling
The Ellenshall Oak Linenfold Panelling was constructed in 1512 for Sir John Harcourt's country residence at Ellenshall, Staffordshire, England. In 1958 the panelling was purchased by Randolph Hearst and shipped to America, where it remained until Architectural Heritage acquired this important panelled room and brought it home to England. It is now re-fitted in a Devon manor house.

Our experienced craftsmen have employed traditional construction techniques, unchanged since the 16th Century, to re-create the Ellenshall Panelling, along with bespoke designs to client's specification.

The process starts by sourcing high quality English Oak which is then quarter sawn to give the planked wood the interesting figuring known as flamed medullary rays.

The styles and rails are formed copying the mouldings from the original panelling, and are secured by pegged mortice and tennon joints. The panels are then formed and left blank or hand carved with linenfold or decorative motifs.

The process ends with the colouring and polishing, in a limed, clear or antique finish.
